Under her headship, the department saw a stream of academic visitors from the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia and of lectorships in Serbo-Croat and Slovene through links that she had established with the Universities of Zagreb and Ljubljana. Marion died peacefully in hospital, her family were fortunate to be able to see her every day and for the final few days were able to spend much more time with her when she was moved to a side room.
