aWhen a lowrisk birth experiences complications, nurse midwives are required by state law to immediately refer and transfer the birth to a physicians care. This body of research demonstrates that the care provided by nurse midwives during labor and delivery in hospitals is comparable, or in some cases, potentially superior to the care provided by physicians. Senate Bill 532 (2009), requires physicians to register with the TMB if the physicians delegate prescriptive authority to PAs or APNs. As Figure10 also shows, nurse midwives fill the gaps in womens health care in three of the five regions with relatively few OBGYNs: the Central Coast, San Diego, and the northern and Sierra counties.
